Black Square is an iconic painting by Kazimir Malevich, a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist, whose pioneering work and writing had a profound influence on the development of non-objective art in the 20th century. The first version of Black Square was completed in 1915. Malevich made four variants of which the last is thought to have been painted during the late 1920s or early 1930s.
